That's a very good point you make here, and an interesting analogy! I think the thing with indie music is that it can also cover such a diverse range - you could say The Killers are indie, even though they are a huge success worldwide now. Would that success still allow them to be classed in the same bracket as a band like Your Vegas, a British and American hybrid who have songs that are just as anthemic as The Killers, yet they probably have about 1% of the audience the better-known band has. I guess the message is, as you point out - look beyond the norm, and if you find something you like, share the knowledge. After all, even McDonald's had to start somewhere! :-)
