The Terence Marciano discusses their influences, their struggles to be recognized, and the difficulties of paying to play venues.
Recenly Terence Marciano sat down for an interview with Suite101 to discuss the origins of the Terence Marciano Band. Musical InspirationsTerence Marciano admits that the idea to start up his own band was rather simple. While him and a few friends went to make a recording one day the three of the them decided that they enjoyed the process enough to make a band. Two years later the Terence Marciano band is still making music. According to Marciano his number one influence musically is Bob Dylan, an inspiration that has led Marciano to dwell upon his own personal situations in his song writing. "The way I learned to play guitar is by learning the Bob Dylan albums all the way through and I guess that helped me learn to write the songs as well. Lyrically my songs are inspired by..well..life," Marciano said. Fitting InThe Terence Marciano Band admits that their music is quite different from the main stream hype. Marciano feels that although some bands are similar to theirs that his band has quite a different style than most. With the bands folk sounding songs like Muy Burracho Marciano admits that it can be at times harder to engage an audience. "There are a lot of folky type bands like Bright Eyes and Kevin Devine, but it's real hard to find a place in with such great bands. People are not so open to hear accordians and lap steels when they are drinking at the bar," Marciano said, adding that MTV usually doesn't want to play their kind of music either. One More TIme- With FeelingMarciano does hope that those who do listen to their music can pull something away from it. It is Marciano's goal when making music to make his audience feel any kind of feeling. "For songs talking about current events it's more so just to open (the listeners) eyes and let them know what is happening. For the love songs or songs about death it's to make people feel that they are not alone going through anything," Marciano said. Marciano admits that the overall response to the band has been good and the bands overall goal is to play for an audience almost every night. But before The Terence Marciano Band can accomplish their goal of playing for larger crowds they need to find a "scene." Long Island ScenesMarciano says that his hometown of Long Island doesn't offer much for a struggling musician. "The Long Island scene is pretty awful I think," Marciano says adding "The only kind of shows they have here are the ones you have to pay to play," Marciano admits that there are several problems with that notion. "What is missing is a scene, I'm not too familiar with the national scene yet but I hope it is more welcoming and a lot more fun than the Long Island scene," Marciano said.
