London based band Survive Atlantica talks about their musical influences, the transition between London and America, and their debut album.

Recently James Kellegher from the band Survive Atlantica sat down in this one-on one interview for Suite101.

Survive Atlantica

After a few line-up changes and a bit of jumbling around the band Survive Atlantica finally was complete as a band two years ago. Vocalist for the band James Kellegher admits that the name Survive Atlantica was one of the few that stuck for them. The name stems from various sources or meanings but to Kellegher it means much more.

"It is partly a release from some of the struggles we have faced, a fresh start" Kellegher said.

Even though the band has faced some struggles they say that they have been making music for most of their lives.

"It's what we were put here for," Kellegher says.

New and Fresh

The London base band gets most of their musical influences from American bands such as Manchester Orchestra and Brand New. But Kellegher admits that Survive Atlantica are also influenced by bands that have never been heard of.

"We also love finding new un-heard of bands that are doing something new and fresh. It's this originality that inspires us to get out there and make music," Kellegher said.

According to Kellegher the local scene in London is actually quite large forcing many bands to die due to lack of exposure. Kellegher says that there is a lack of people who want to go to see fresh live music.

Kellegher classifies Survive Atlantica as "a broad mix of indie/rock with a heavier and softer shade."

Survive Atlantica says that they can stand away from the crowd with their style because their band does not follow the usual metal, pop-punk, or screamo roots.

"Even though we like the music (that's) not what we want to make," Kellegher says.

From London to America

Survive Atlantica hopes that their listeners will walk away from them with a sense of release. According to Kellegher the band is about thoughts, feelings, and expressionism.

"We find our music can be a release for some people, it can make them feel euphoric, or just vent some much needed anger," Kellegher said.

Despite the fact that Survive Atlantica is based out of London they find they don't have trouble getting their music out to those across the seas.

In fact Kellegher mentions that websites such as Myspace or Purevolume have given them little struggle to share their music with other countries.

"I Woke the Devil"

Survive Atlantica has a lot coming up for them in the next few months. The band is expecting to release their debut album entitled "I Woke the Devil" worldwide sometime in the summer of 2009. Kellegher says their goal is to spread the word about the album to as many people as they can.

"We are working to spread the word of this and to play as many shows as we can to get our sound to (listening) ears," Kellegher said.
