Anthony Bloch of the band Sepia Tone talks about the progression of the band within the last year and their upcoming album "Progress Note."

Anthony Bloch from the St. Paul Minnesota band Sepia Tone recently sat down with Suite101 for an interview about the bands newest album "Progress Note."

A Genre All Their Own

In a genre that drummer Anthony Bloch calls " Rock, funk, and indie," he has made it clear that the band Sepia Tone was attempting to push boundries. In fact, although the band spans several different genres of music Bloch admits that Sepia Tone are still trying to convey a new sound.

"(We are) constantly pushing the bar and trying to do more," Bloch said.

Bloch has been playing music since he could remember, and he said the it was the same for the other members of the band as well. After forming in April of 2007 the band immediately released their self titled EP.

Now, almost two years later Sepia Tone are working on their full length album entitled "Progress Note" set to be released May 8th, 2009.

Bloch says it's important for the band to continue to work together in the music making process and that every member is able to contribute new influences or ideas.

The Higher Standard

Bloch admits that it's Sepia Tone's goal to continue to have a higher standard when making their music.

"It's really important to have interesting, thoughtful, challenging music at least for us it is" he said.

The band also hopes to continue experimenting with their music and also to try to reach out to more and more fans.

One of the things that help the band Sepia Tone to reach their audience is the internet. Bloch says he is striving to do better with social networking. With websites such as Myspace or Jambase.com Bloch says these sites allow bands and their fans to connect more.

"It definitely makes it a lot easier," Bloch said.

"Progress Note"

Originally Sepia Tone had thirty-five songs to chose from when making their new album "Progress Note." How the band decided which songs went on the album simply came down to those that the band enjoyed playing the best live from the songs the audience responded the most to.

According to Bloch the band spent at least one hundred and fifty hours picking apart over sixty takes of these songs to determine what little pieces they liked best about each one.

Bloch says that the biggest worry for the band while making the album was overproducing it since they did not want to take any of the spontaneity that a live show would bring.

Bloch admits that with the self produced album ready to be released to a mass audience that now is a great time to be in the music industry.

"It's been a fantastic ride," Bloch said.
