LEONE- An Interview with Will ThomasStuart Florida Band Hopes to Make More Than Music.
Will Thomas, the lead singer of Florida band LEONE talks about making music and how he hopes his band may one day influence their audience.
Will Thomas, lead singer of Stuart Florida band LEONE (Lee-own) recently sat down for an interview with Suite101 to talk about LEONE's music and their strive to become a band larger than it's sound. The Story Behind the BandLEONE, meaning lion in Hebrew, started together as a band a little over a year and a half ago. Will Thomas is the lead singer and lyricist for the band. Thomas started playing guitar at the age of 17 and began singing a year later. Thomas admits when he writes the lyrics for the band they are mostly autobiographical, and that each one of the songs mean something to Thomas. "All of our songs are all living and breathing moments in time for me. Song meanings change over time." He said. When talking about the bands song The Tempter Thomas says their is a story behind the song. "My understanding at least is that it is about the voices that dwell in everyones minds. The voices of good and the voices of "evil" and about how sometimes the voice of evil is a lot louder." Thomas adds that the song is about trying to find ones way in the world. Larger Than Their SoundLEONE said that their musical influences come from bands such as U2, Nirvana, and Neutral Milk Hotel. "I am really into bands that seem to be larger than their sounds, which I hope one day LEONE will be," Thomas said. One of LEONE'S many plans may be to one day create an impact on as many people as possible. Thomas says he would hope to create something more than just music for the audience. "Bands such as U2 have a spiritual side to them that's undeniable. I guess one silly goal would be to some day achieve that, we'll see, Thomas said. But first, LEONE faces challenges within the local music scene. Thomas admits that the local music scene in Florida can at times be harsh. "I feel it is superficial and heartless. But, I guess we can all be superficial at times. I would hope our music is different to some degree," Thomas said. An Album In The WorksLEONE had released an EP entitled Watch The Fig Tree while Thomas was still in high school, he says that the EP to him is a look at a more immature sound of Leone, at least when it comes to the lyrics. Currently Leone is writing a full length album that they plan to start recording in August of 2009. Thomas is excited about the new album and hopes others will be as well. "We are very excited to share this album with anyone who will listen," Thomas said. MySpace Vs. The Feature AlbumWhen it comes to websites such as MySpace or Purevolume for promoting his band Thomas admits he is a bit torn. "I wish our band was around in the nineties. The idea of the "full length" record is unfortunately dying and I feel the internet absolutely had a big part in that." Thomas adds that although he is a big supporter of the full length album websites such as MySpace are important if a band wants to stay relevant. " I guess it's a love hate (relationship) for me," Thomas said. Check out LEONE at www.myspace.com/leonerock
