Laguna Meth: 'Laguna The Puma' ReviewA Look At The Genreless Album
Michael Laguna from California in the United States released this album to critical acclaim. 'Uncut' magazine called it a 'lost classic', but is it really that good?
Trying to pin this album down to a genre is about as difficult as it gets for a writer. Laguna Meth's album is a mix of psychadelic rock, indie and pop, and the creativity of the songwriter Michael Laguna is rather outstanding. The Variety on 'Laguna The Puma'Michael Laguna must have an eclectic musical taste that's for sure. In the song 'Laguna Meth' for example, some parts resemble a Placebo song, while other sections of the same song are just incomparable to anything else. This is rather a talent as on the album, there is so much diversity the listener could never get bored. To describe the sound fully, the term 'acid indie' seems to suit. While this is a strange sounding genre, it is describing a strange sounding album, but that isn't a bad thing at all. Laguna seperates himself from a sea of generic sounding indie bands by adding the psychedelic element, and it is truly unique. Replay Value of 'Laguna The Puma'On first listen, the album is admittedly a bit too bizarre to take in. The opener, 'Nuclear Snowcone' sets the scene, and as a listener, one thinks at this point that they have made a mistake buying this record. Songs like 'Everybody Loves Acid On A Sunday Morning' add to this, as it is hard to find anything quite as weird as this offering. However, there is something that compels the listener to give this album a second chance, and on the second listen, it definitely improves. In fact, with every listen the quality of the album seems to improve. The reason for this is that with every listen, the sound becomes comprehensible, and the bizarreness changes from a hindrance to a definite strength. In fact, trying to get songs such as 'Trippin' and 'Studboy' out of your head after hearing them is very difficult, and the positivity of the album is infectious. The record leaves a good taste in the mouth of the listener which is always an advantage. The Drawbacks of 'Laguna The Puma'Like every album, this has it's flaws. 'Children of the Garden Unicorn' is a particularly poor track as it seems to lack direction throughout. The lyrics of the album are a topic of debate as well. There is nothing particularly deep or thought provoking contained within them, but they do add to the infectious feeling of the album, so that is a rather 50:50 issue. Laguna is evidently a fairly good musician though, as evidenced by the amount of instruments featured on the record. In addition, the album is mixed and produced well, which improves the quality of any CD. 'Laguna The Puma': To Buy Or Not To Buy?As a listener, challenging your tastes and expanding your musical awareness is never a bad thing. This album is definitely worth taking a punt on, as it really isn't a bad record. Song To Check Out: Trippin' - A good example of the diversity of Laguna Meth.
