Artist Spotlight: Last To BeginIndie Rockers On The Rise, Disbanded Before Their Time
Loved by the Chicago scene, Last To Begin was a sight to see. The richly textured guitar work alone made Last To Begin worth seeing, but sadly they disbanded to soon.
Band, Last To Begin, saw many incarnations during it's short run, though founding members, Eric Laubinger and Joshua Bublitz were a constant. The band was initially formed in 2006 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Both Laubinger and Bublitz had solo indie projects and upon meeting decided that they would compliment one another very well in a collaborative effort. The Many Faces of Last To Begin The dynamic duo began their career by playing open mic nights all over the Milwaukee and Chicago areas and during their time on the circuit, they managed to gather quite the following. Eventually their popularity led to the boys wanting to round out their sound a bit more by turning the project into a full band. This led to the addition of keyboardist/drummer Steph. Steph was followed with the addition of cellist, Crittle and finally they had enough of a band to start playing actual shows. Their first real show was at Chicago's Beat Kitchen and it was also their last show due to personal conflicts. In 2007, the boys decided that their music was too important to just give up on. So, they gave it another shot. They acquired bass player, Jason Marshall and drummer Tim Gleason. The re-incarnation of the band decided it was about time to put together a demo. Demonstration 7 Their first demo, Demonstration 7, shortly followed. It was released March 1, 2008 and was self-recorded in Laubinger's make-shift bedroom studio. The demo was 7 songs long and boasted songs that covered the entire era of Last To Begin. Including one of their first collaborative efforts, "How Many Times" and one of their more recent efforts, "January 28th." You Know We're Not Like Them, We Are Last To Begin Music so saddeningly beautiful is a rare gift, and Laubinger and Bublitz were able to create it en masse. Theirs was a raw talent that is not often seen in the music scene today, each riff, each vocal performance dripped with emotion. It was evident that these two gentlemen were putting more than just time into their music, they lived music. Sadly, the band disbanded after playing Alpine Valley's 2007 Fall Music Menagerie. Though, there is no doubt that their music will live on in the hearts and minds of their fans. Perhaps, someday they will return to wow the masses with their beautifully talented songwriting, though probably not. They earned a spot among the musicians that peter out before their time. Last To Begin's music is still available for listening purposes at both their myspace profile and their last fm profile. So, take some time to listen to one of the most promising bands ever to grace the stage. Other Indie Music Articles By This Author
